finally, a good reason to be pulled-over

Kalona, a rural town in Iowa, is making the national spotlight for a recent public relations campaign that involves pulling over unsuspecting out of state drivers.

The Chamber of Commerce and the town’s sheriff began pulling over out of state drivers last week. Once to the side of the road, the drivers are approached by the town’s sheriff and asked if they have about 20 hours to spend with us here in Kalona.

Drivers are then given a gift basket full of goodies from local Kalona businesses, a free night’s stay and a T-shirt that says, “Ask me about Kalona, Iowa.”

I think this is an interesting approach at stimulating tourism in rural America. However, it does raise a few questions regarding what happens in certain situations. For example, what happens if the driver they pull over has been drinking or has a warrant out for their arrest?

I’m not trying to be nit-picky and I’m sure the town has thought through all the details. These are just the first questions that come to mind.

But I’m from rural Minnesota, and I completely get what they are trying to do here. I’m sure Kalona is a nice family friendly place where everyone knows your name.

Cheap Cheers reference :)

Sugary Sweet PR Treat

San Francisco Candy LandThe Candy Cane Forest and Lollipop Woods have never tasted so sweet. King Kandy and Princess Frostine have never seemed so real.

The world’s most crooked street was transformed into an enormous Candy Land for the game’s 60th birthday. The curves of San Francisco’s Lombard Street were paved with colorful game board tiles, while patients from a nearby children’s hospital stepped in as live players and helped the birthday bash turn out to be a delightful success.

What a fantastic, magical PR stunt for the children who love Candy Land and the adults whose childhood memories may very well reside there.

Kosher Swish

matzoballA 267-pound, 3-foot high matzo ball that was made with 1,000 eggs, 200 pounds of matzo meal, 80 pounds of margarine and 20 pounds of chicken base was up for serving yesterday morning at a NYC deli.

Why the mountain of matzo? On October 18, the New York Knicks will host the Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball team at Madison Square Garden for a charity game. What a publicity stunt!

It’s the perfect way to mesh Israeli and New York culture and cause quite the stir. There’s probably not much that can stop a New Yorker dead in their busy, fast-paced, seen-it-all tracks, but I’m sure this did it. The matzo ball even had its own NYPD escort. Hopefully, Knicks fans will hurry to the ticket office (proceeds benefit Migdal Ohr, an orphanage in Israel) and Noah’s Ark Original Deli will see some traffic, too.

Go Knicks!?!

Top 50 Publicity Stunts

Taylor Herring, a London-based PR agency known for high profile consumer campaigns, has compiled a list of their favorite 50 publicity stunts. Of course they included a couple stunts of their own. But who can blame them? They’re one of the best!

Following are a few of my picks from the list:

Prince Changes His Name

Following a row with his record company, Prince announced to the world (on June 7th, 1993) that he would be changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol.

Borat At The White House

In September 2006, Secret Service officers denied Borat access to The White House. Sacha Baron Cohen’s creation had hoped to persuade ‘Premier George Walter Bush’ to attend a screening of his film. The antics prompted the Kazakh government to disown the movie, which went on to take more than $248 million worldwide.

Polar Bear Stranded On The Thames

Taylor Herring’s launch stunt for natural history channel Eden.

Which ones are your favorites?

earth day

earthday11

Since today is Earth Day, we thought we would write about a company that is doing their part to make our world greener.

King 5 News (Seattle,WA) reported today that Jones Soda’s corporate headquarters has taken itself completely off the power grid today.  How is this possible?

Jones employees, using a system developed by the applied physics lab at University of Washington, will ride nine bicycles throughout the day to power their office.  The system uses the momentum from the bicycles to continuously recharge numerous batteries.  These batteries direct the power to a main source and this source is essentially what will power their office today.

I think this is really exciting. Especially since they have asked residents of the community to come by and help peddle.

PR Stunts – Funny and Thrilling

Big bellies and big pom-poms

CBS

Courtesy of CBS

Apparently pretty girls in skin-tight spandex waving pom-poms is not enough eye candy at the Florida Marlins’ games. They’re recruiting a different kind of cheerleading squad – an all male, big-bellied one named the Marlins Manatees. I just have one thought on that, but I’m keeping it to myself! However, I have to give those guys credit. They have a lot of team pride and lots of guts (no pun intended) to get out on the field and dance for the fans. I sure couldn’t do it!

The sky is not the limit

Don’t be late for this dinner reservation or you’ll get left on the ground. Brussels-based communications agency Hakuna Matata and its partner, Benji Fun, helped Dolce La Hulpe Brussels Hotel, Resort & Conference Destination host a “Dinner in the Sky”. Guests dined 164 feet in the air! Now this is a pretty cool stunt. Can you imagine the safety codes needed to pull it off, though?

Whether I liked these or not, they must have worked because they made the news and got me talking. What do you think? Any fun PR stunts to share?
