Four ways to maximize SEO

Contributed by Lucas Neiderer, Weise Communications Public Relations Intern.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)  has a large impact on generating revenue and business conversation. One common misconception is that a company can throw a bunch of key words on their website copy and they will automatically go to the top of a Google search. Although this sounds like an easy solution, I assure you it will not do the trick. More and more businesses are using SEO. In order to be on the first page of Google, your SEO has to be better than the business next door.

Here are four ways to maximize your SEO and keep customers on your site longer than 30 seconds

1. Social Media. You may be tired of hearing about it, but there are good reasons why social media is important for SEO. Just because a business has a couple hundred or thousand followers on Twitter or fans on Facebook doesn’t meant it’s effectively increasing SEO. Businesses need to actively engage in social media by interacting in twitter conversations, posting updates on Facebook and communicating with audiences via social media on a regular basis. By keeping up with social media you are allowing high optimization and searchable results for your business as it continues to make updates and interact in online conversation.

2. Architecture, Content and Marketing. A business’ website must have all three of these components. This is where a business goes deeper than inserting key words into their homepage copy and creates a winning SEO strategy. The website must use sitemaps, have updated meta data, and utilize up-and-coming technology. The content of the site must include the key words, proper and formal formatting, and density of content regarding the services and products of the business. Lastly, the site must create link-building opportunities and allow the site content to be distributed and easily accessible throughout other sites and platforms.

3. Volume and Understanding. The average time spent on a website is less than one minute. A business’ site may have great SEO and attract a high volume of viewers, but if the site is not appealing, visitors will not stay and any business opportunities are lost. A good way to do this is to understand your customers. What are they looking for when they visit the site? Would you want to stay on the site if you arrived there? Is it easy to navigate and understand?

4. Get People Talking. The more people talk about your website, the greater your SEO becomes. Every time your website is linked in a tweet, Facebook post or any social media engagement, the website conversation is created, increasing the search-ability of your business. Give your customers a reason to talk about your company, whether it be a new product or a community project and interact with them.

How easy is it to find your business on the web? Could your business use optimization?

Some nice point there. Content is very key. It is also important to keep that content freshly updated with new information, search engine robots love that stuff. Plus, it keeps your viewers much more interested to continue coming since they know you’ll continue adding on to it. It’s really difficult to start getting people to make comments and remarks about your pages. Patience, patience, patience :) Check out my tips too on my blog! would love some feedback!

Thanks. You’re right, patience is key with social media. Many businesses think they will immediately receive ROI from social media. The key is staying engaged and becoming part of the industry’s conversation. I checked out your blog and I agree, it is unbelievable how social media is shaping the way we communicate. While in college I remember first hearing about Twitter and Facebook, not realizing the revolution that was about to occur. Luckily my eyes have been opened and I’m taking advantage of every opportunity possible. Thanks again for the comment!

Interesting points. Even doing the small things like making sure your meta tags and descriptions contain your keywords boosts your rankings. Especially for local searches. Looking forward to your next post.
